Do you ever wonder if songwriters purposefully make their lyrics hard to understand? Is your version sometimes wildly different from the actual lyrics?
This brings us to “Sergeant Town”. For years I enjoyed listening to this song on the radio. When it was first released I didn’t know who sang it. As you’ll soon find out, I didn’t even know the name of the song. I just knew it as “Sergeant Town” and it was a fun sing-along. Here’s my version:
“She was singing don’t turn around, oh-oh.
Ja Ja. They call me Sergeant Town, oh-oh.
(blah blah blah blah)
the more you live the faster you will die.”
Does that sound familiar to anybody?? Probably not, but it kind of made sense in my head.
Originally released by Falco in 1981, “Der Kommissar” was covered by After the Fire in 1982.
Here are the lyrics to the famous chorus:
She was singin’
Don’t turn around, uh-oh
Der Kommissar’s in town, uh-oh
You’re in his eye
And you’ll know why
The more you live
The faster you will die
It’s a tremendous sing-along, made all the better when you actually know the words.
Now, for your viewing and listening pleasure…
